My art is varied in media and technique, and is linked by my interest in exploring a sense of place. I’m inspired by location, and by imagining what has been experienced in a particular location. Much of my art is triggered by my own experience of walking through an environment, imagining what the trees or rocks have witnessed, and then finding a way to convey that sense of both history and my contemporary experience.
I like using many different materials and working with a range of techniques. Once I have an idea I tend to choose materials and techniques which help convey that idea. For example, I like stitching on paper or fabric because for me, a simple running stitch suggests walking, which is one of my inspirations. I like painting, collage and printmaking because the process itself involves layering, and to me, this helps the artwork talk about layers of history or experience.
I have a studio at Mary Thomson House, next to the Vancouver Arts Centre, Vancouver Street, Albany. The changing seasons and skies as seen when looking across Princess Royal Harbour, Albany, from my studio have inspired several of my recent paintings.
Along with three other artists I am part of an upcoming exhibition titled “Cast” at the Princess Royal Fortress Heritage Park (the location of the National Anzac Centre). “Cast” will be shown in the heritage building, the Married Quarters, accessible via the Convoy Walk. It opens on September 26, 2020, and will continue until early November.
