Sarah McNamara studied a Sculpture major at Claremont School of Arts and has been immersed in the visual and performing arts for nearly five decades. Her practice has evolved through a wide range of contexts, including solo and group exhibitions, community-based projects, theatre and circus design, and arts education.
Until 2023, Sarah worked as a Visual Arts Specialist at Flinders Park Primary School in Albany, a role that deepened her commitment to creative inquiry, storytelling, and material exploration across generations.
Working across multiple mediums, her recent focus has centred on graphite studies, painting, and collage, often incorporating her own hand-printed papers. Her approach is intuitive and deeply felt, driven by a love of making and a trust in process. Imagery is allowed to emerge through layering, repetition, and mark-making, guided as much by instinct as by intention.
Sarah’s visual language is mythic in tone, occupying a liminal space between the real and the imagined. Figures and forms drift between worlds, suggesting narrative without fixing meaning, and inviting the viewer into a quiet, contemplative encounter. Her work explores transformation, memory, and the porous boundaries between inner and outer landscapes.
Sarah lives and works in Albany, Western Australia.
